Tap Into the Rocky Inside You: How to Go the Distance in Business and in Life
By Steve Rizzo | The Rocky Inside You
Let me ask you something. When was the last time you felt like you were losing a fight you never even signed up for? Maybe it was a deal that fell through, a client who walked away, or a Monday that felt like it lasted 72 hours. If you’re human, you’ve been there. Fortunately, there’s a champion who can help you get back on your feet, and he lives closer than you think. In fact, he lives inside you. I’m talking about the Rocky inside you.
Yes, that Rocky. The underdog from Philadelphia with the gray sweatsuit, the mumbled one-liners, and the heart of a lion. As a former national headline comedian who spent years getting knocked around by tough crowds, I can tell you I related to Rocky Balboa more than I’d like to admit. Today, as a keynote speaker, I’ve noticed something powerful. Everybody has a Rocky in them. Unfortunately, most people never let him into the ring.
So in this blog, I want to show you how to tap into the Rocky inside you, whether you run a company, lead a team, or are just trying to get through the week with your sanity and your sense of humor intact.
The Rocky Inside You: Why the Rocky Story Still Hits So Hard
First, let’s talk about why this story still resonates nearly 50 years after the original film came out in 1976. On the surface, it’s a boxing movie. However, it’s really a story about mindset. Rocky was a nobody. He was a small-time fighter collecting debts for a loan shark. Then, out of nowhere, he got a shot at the heavyweight champion of the world, Apollo Creed.
Here’s what most people forget. Rocky didn’t win that first fight. That’s right, he lost. Even so, he won something far more important. His goal was never to knock out Apollo. Instead, his goal was to go the distance, to still be standing when the final bell rang, and to prove to himself that he wasn’t just another bum from the neighborhood.
And that, my friends, is the lesson. Success isn’t always about winning every round. More often, it’s about refusing to stay down.
Interestingly, the real-life story behind the movie is just as inspiring. Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor with very little money when he wrote the script. When a studio wanted to buy it, he reportedly turned down big offers because they wanted someone else to play the lead. In other words, Stallone was living the Rocky mindset before Rocky ever hit the big screen. He believed in himself when almost nobody else did. As a result, the film became a classic and won the Academy Award for Best Picture. This is what tapping into the Rocky inside you is all about.
What It Really Means to Tap Into the Rocky Inside You
Now, let me be clear. Tapping into the Rocky inside you doesn’t mean drinking raw eggs at 4 a.m. or punching sides of beef in a meat locker. Please don’t. Your cardiologist and your local butcher will both thank you.
Instead, it means adopting the mindset that made Rocky a champion. In every keynote I give, I say the same thing: Mindset is everything. Your mindset is the set of thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and attitudes that shape how you see your business, your world, and yourself. Consequently, it determines the actions you take, and those actions determine your outcomes. Put simply, your mindset writes the story of your life.
So the real question is this: What kind of story are you writing right now? Is it the story of a guy who gets knocked down and stays on the canvas? Or is it the story of someone who gets up, shakes it off, and says, “Is that all you got?”
With that in mind, let’s break down the key ingredients of the Rocky mindset.
1. Believe in Yourself Before Anyone Else Does
Nobody believed in Rocky at the start. Not the boxing world, not the media, and at times not even his own trainer, Mickey. Nevertheless, the turning point came when Rocky decided to believe in himself.
The same is true for you. Whether you’re launching a business, pitching a big client, or going after a promotion, you can’t wait for the world to give you permission. If you do, you’ll be waiting a long time. Instead, you have to be your own first believer.
For example, when I was starting out in comedy, there were nights when the audience looked at me like I was a parking ticket. Honestly, I could have quit. Plenty of comics did. But I kept telling myself I had something to offer, and I kept showing up. Eventually, the laughs came. More importantly, the belief came first.
2. Go the Distance, Even When You Can’t Win Every Round
In business and in life, you’re going to lose some rounds. A product will flop. A key employee will leave. The economy will throw a left hook you never saw coming. That’s just reality.
However, losing a round is not the same as losing the fight. Rocky understood that. He took a beating from Apollo, and yet he kept coming forward. Similarly, the most successful business owners I’ve met over the years aren’t the ones who never failed. On the contrary, they’re the ones who failed, learned, adjusted, and kept moving forward.
Therefore, I want you to redefine what winning looks like for you. Sometimes winning is closing the deal. Other times, winning is simply getting up the next morning and trying again with a better strategy and a better attitude. This is the Rocky inside you.
3. Train When Nobody Is Watching
One of the most iconic scenes in movie history is Rocky running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. But think about all the cold, dark mornings that came before that triumphant moment. Nobody was clapping. Nobody was cheering. It was just Rocky, the streets of Philly, and his commitment.
Likewise, your success is built in the moments when nobody’s watching. It’s the extra phone call you make at the end of a long day, the book you read instead of scrolling social media for an hour, and the practice, the preparation, and the small daily habits that add up over time.
In my book Motivate This!, I talk about starting each day with an unstoppable attitude to succeed regardless of your circumstances. That’s exactly what Rocky did. He didn’t wait to feel motivated. Instead, he got up and got to work, and the motivation followed.
4. Surround Yourself With Your Own Corner Team
Every fighter needs a corner. Rocky had Mickey pushing him, Paulie hanging around for better or worse, and Adrian believing in him. Without them, he might never have made it to the final bell.
So who’s in your corner? Are they people who lift you up, or people who drag you down? This matters more than most of us realize. If you’re a business owner, your corner might include mentors, a supportive team, and a few honest friends who’ll tell you when you’re dropping your guard. Meanwhile, if you’re an employee or just an everyday person trying to make it work, your corner could be family, coworkers, or a community group.
Either way, choose your corner wisely. After all, the people around you have a huge influence on your mindset, and your mindset determines your results.
5. Find the Humor in the Fight
Okay, this is where the comedian in me comes out. Rocky had a great sense of humor. Remember how he cracked corny jokes for Adrian at the pet shop and talked to his turtles, Cuff and Link? Even in his toughest moments, he could find something to smile about.
That’s not a small thing. In fact, I believe it’s one of the most underrated success tools there is. I often say that you’re not just a human being, you’re a HUMOR BEING. When you learn to laugh at your problems, even a little, you take away their power over you. Consequently, you think more clearly, make better decisions, and treat people better.
To be clear, I’m not saying your problems aren’t serious. Rather, I’m saying you can take your situation seriously without taking yourself so seriously. Humor gives you perspective. Furthermore, it reduces stress, builds connection, and helps you bounce back faster. As the Mindset Adjuster, I’ve seen entire organizations transform when people learn to lighten up and look at their challenges from a different angle.
The Rocky Inside You: How Business Owners Can Lead Like Rocky
Now let’s get specific about business. If you’re leading a company or a team, your people are watching how you handle the punches. When you panic, they panic. On the other hand, when you stay calm, focused, and even find a reason to smile, they follow your lead.
Here are a few practical ways to bring the Rocky mindset into your leadership:
- Share your setbacks honestly. Your team will respect you more when they see you get knocked down and get back up.
- Celebrate going the distance, not just the knockouts. Recognize effort, persistence, and progress, not only the big wins.
- Set a training routine for your organization. Consistent habits, clear goals, and regular check-ins build a championship culture.
- Keep your sense of humor. Laughter during tough times builds trust and resilience faster than any memo ever could.
As a result, you won’t just survive tough times. Better yet, you’ll build a team that’s tougher, more loyal, and more creative because of them.
How Everyday People Can Tap Into the Rocky Inside You
Of course, you don’t have to own a company to need a little Rocky in your life. Maybe you’re dealing with a health scare, a divorce, a financial setback, or just a season where nothing seems to go right. I get it. Believe me, I’ve been there.
So here’s what I want you to do. Start small. Tomorrow morning, before you check your phone, ask yourself one question: “What kind of story am I going to write today?” Then pick one action, just one, that moves you a step closer to the person you want to be. It might be a walk, or a phone call you’ve been avoiding. It might be forgiving someone, including yourself.
After that, do it again the next day. And the day after that. Before you know it, you’ll be running up your own set of steps with your arms in the air.
The Rocky Inside You: From “Woe Is Me” to “Wow Is Me”
One of my favorite things to do is help people shift from “Woe is me” to “Wow is me.” Rocky made that shift. He went from a guy who didn’t believe he mattered to a man who stood toe to toe with the champ and refused to fall.
Ultimately, that shift happens in your mind before it ever happens in your life. You don’t need a movie studio, a famous trainer, or a theme song blaring in the background. Although, let’s be honest, a theme song helps. Go ahead, hum it. I’ll wait.
What you really need is a decision. The decision to believe in yourself. The decision to keep showing up. And the decision to laugh, learn, and keep moving forward no matter how hard life hits you.
Final Round: Your Bell Is Ringing
So here’s my challenge to you. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. Stop waiting for someone to hand you a title shot. Instead, tap into the Rocky inside you right now, today, in whatever ring you happen to be standing in.
Because the truth is, you’re tougher than you think. You’ve already survived every bad day you’ve ever had. That’s a 100 percent track record. Now imagine what you could do if you started fighting for your dreams with the heart of a champion and the mindset of a winner.
