Let’s talk about how to manage your mindset for success. First, let’s start with the one truth that changes everything: You are the creator of your success and happiness. Not the economy, your boss or your circumstances. You. That’s not wishful thinking — it’s a principle I’ve built my career on, and it’s the foundation of every keynote I’ve delivered to thousands of business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals around the world.
Now, I know what some of you are thinking: “Steve, you don’t know what I’m dealing with.” And you’re right — I don’t. But here’s what I do know: it’s not what happens to you that determines your quality of success and happiness. It’s what you do about what happens that makes the difference. The choices you make. The thoughts you have about what happens. That’s where your power lives.
As a Hall of Fame keynote speaker, a former national headline comedian, and someone who has spent decades studying the relationship between mindset and results, I can tell you without hesitation: the single most important factor in whether you thrive or merely survive is the mindset you bring to every situation. So let’s break this down into the three core principles I live by — and that I believe can shift everything for you.
How to Manage Your Mindset for Success: Principle #1: You Are Both the Problem and the Solution
Here’s something most motivational content won’t tell you, but I will: You are the only problem you will ever have. And somewhere within you, there is always a solution waiting to be discovered.
Before you take that personally, understand what it means. It doesn’t mean life is easy. It doesn’t mean hardship isn’t real. What it means is that the power to respond to any challenge — to navigate it, to grow through it, to overcome it — has always resided within you. The challenge is learning to get out of your own way and allowing that solution to reveal itself.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the problem will automatically disappear. What it means is that there is a power within you that can guide you to accept, embrace, and work your way through the problem. That’s what empowerment is all about. And as a business owner or professional, that distinction is critical — because the moment you stop pointing outward and start looking inward, your capacity to lead, innovate, and perform expands dramatically.
The Real Question
Think about this: whenever you are confronted with a challenge of any kind, it’s never a matter of managing the situation. It’s always a matter of how you manage your mind. That’s the real question — can you manage your mind and the toxic thoughts and beliefs that are keeping you from finding the solution that’s waiting to be discovered?

How to Manage Your Mindset for Success: Principle #2: Life Is Supposed to Have Problems — Manage Your Mind, Not Just the Moment
Let me say something that might surprise you — and I say this from stages across the globe: Life is supposed to have problems. I hear it all the time. People say, “Why me? Life is always picking on me. I’ve got all these problems and nothing ever goes right.” And I get it. We’ve all been there. But here’s the mindset shift that changes everything:
Most people believe the universe is somehow against them when things go wrong. They think life isn’t supposed to be difficult, and when it is, something has gone terribly wrong. But that belief is the very thing that traps you. Problems aren’t a sign that you’re failing — they’re a sign that you’re alive, that you’re growing, that you’re being asked to become more.
We are here on this planet to Experience… Learn… Grow… and to Become. How you experience all of the things that happen to you — the things you label as good or bad, right or wrong, fair or unfair — will determine what you Learn. That continued Learning leads to your Growth. And that continued Growth paves the way to who and what you Become. Your job is to Become the best person you can be, regardless of your circumstances. And that depends entirely on the mindset you have on any given day.
Pause and Ask Yourself
So the next time life feels like it’s piling on, I want you to pause and ask yourself: “Am I managing this moment, or am I managing my mind?” Because here’s the truth — you can’t always control what happens. But you absolutely can control how you respond to it.
And this is where the deeper work begins. Managing your mind isn’t about positive thinking alone. It’s about connecting to the higher part of you — that inner intelligence, that deeper wisdom — that already has the answers. When you quiet the noise of fear, frustration, and self-doubt, and you genuinely connect to that higher part of yourself, something remarkable happens: clarity emerges. Solutions appear. The path forward reveals itself.
That’s not mysticism. That’s how the most successful leaders, entrepreneurs, and high performers in the world operate. They’ve learned to trust something deeper than the panic of the moment. They’ve learned to manage their minds.
There was a 13th century poet by the name of Milton who said, “The mind is its own place and in itself can make a Heaven of Hell or a Hell of Heaven.” What a powerful statement — and how true it is. The mind is its own place, but it’s important to understand that your thoughts emanate from your mind and influence future thoughts. Those very thoughts are the determining factors that make a “heaven of hell” or a “hell of heaven” in your life.
In other words, it’s not what happens to you that determines your quality of life. It’s how you identify with it — how you perceive what’s happening — that makes all the difference.
How to Manage Your Mindset for Success: Principle #3: The Mindset You Carry Determines the Life You Create
Here’s where we get into the real work of shifting your mindset — and why I call myself the Mindset Adjuster. Because shifting your mindset isn’t a one-time event. It’s a daily practice. It’s a commitment to choosing, again and again, to think in ways that serve your growth rather than sabotage it.
Some people view their challenges as opportunities for growth. It’s not that they go through life with blinders on. They simply know that life is filled with ecstatic moments and sad days, good times and bad, ups and downs, and ride the waves of change and uncertainty with equanimity. Persevering regardless of their circumstances, because they know there is something within them that can meet any challenge head on — and become empowered as a result.
A Gradual Shift in Focus
These are the people who allow themselves to temporarily step away from moments that are bringing them down or stressing them out. They gradually shift their focus and way of thinking to what’s working in their lives, rather than fixating on what isn’t. They bless what life has given them rather than cursing what life is currently throwing at them. And they have an incredible ability to find the laughter in between — and even during — the tough times. This is empowerment, and we all have the power to do this.
Then there are those who make challenging situations more difficult than they have to be. And that’s because of the way they identify and perceive the challenge. It’s their negative commentary — their inner dialogue, their woe-is-me story — that blows the challenge out of proportion.
You know the voice I’m talking about: “Here we go again! I can’t believe this! Every time I try to achieve something, it never works! I’m always going two steps up and three steps back. I feel I’m not good enough. Not smart enough. Not worthy enough. Everybody else has what I want. I guess dreams are for other people and I’m not one of them.”
Most people call this Negative Self-Talk. I call it Self-Curse-Talk. Why? Because you’re casting a spell on your life. Think about that for a moment — because it matters more than most business strategies you’ll ever learn.
Why Self-Curse-Talk Is Your Biggest Professional and Personal Liability
If there is anything that’s going to keep you from manifesting what you want in your life, it’s Self-Curse-Talk. It will keep you from being creative and productive. If there is anything that’s going to keep you from finding solutions to your problems, it’s Self-Curse-Talk. And if you’re having a difficult time enjoying the process of whatever you’re trying to achieve, that too is the result of Self-Curse-Talk. So, let’s talk more about how to manage your mindset for success.
This is precisely what I mean when I say you are the creator of your success and happiness. The beginning of creation starts with a single thought. Which means you literally have to think about what you’re thinking on a daily basis — because those toxic thoughts are creating your reality. And here’s the kicker: those thoughts don’t even have to be true. If you believe they’re true, that’s all that matters in your world.
Your subconscious mind runs approximately 97% of your life. It’s entirely objective — it doesn’t know the difference between true or false. It only knows the information you’re programming into it. So if you’re constantly feeding it messages like “work equals stress” or “I’m not worthy of success,” you could be creating a belief system that is completely at odds with your goals. That’s not conducive for being creative or productive, and it certainly isn’t conducive for enjoying your life. And if you’re not enjoying what you do for a living, you are not living up to your full potential. Period.

The Shift Starts Now
So where do you go from here? You start by becoming aware. Awareness is the first step in any genuine mindset shift, and in how to manage your mindset for success. Start noticing the stories you tell yourself. Start catching the Self-Curse-Talk before it takes root. And then — and this is the part most people skip — replace it with something intentional.
As I often say from the stage: you have the power to ride the waves of change with strength, clarity, and even a sense of humor. That’s not denial — that’s wisdom. It’s the kind of emotional intelligence that separates the leaders who thrive from those who simply survive.
Your HUMOR BEING
Because here’s the bottom line: your HUMOR BEING — your ability to find lightness even in the heaviest moments — is one of your greatest untapped business assets. It reduces stress, increases creativity, builds connection, and keeps you resilient when everything around you is uncertain. Don’t underestimate it.
Mindset is absolutely everything. And once you fully own that truth — once it moves from a concept you’ve heard to a principle you live — everything starts to shift. Your relationships, results, revenue and your life.
