Stop Making Excuses Today: Beating Procrastination At Its Own Game

You probably envy your colleagues who leave work early and wish you could join them for Happy Hour.

You’re stuck with a mountain of workload, while your colleagues give you a pat on the back, telling you how hard you work.

Sleepless nights, piles of coffee mugs and leaving from home at the break of dawn have become the norm for you. Every day, you tell yourself that today is the last day you will be buried under so much work.

However, it’s always the same. Everyone leaves on time while you…get distracted.

The truth is, everyone has been there at some point in their lives. Working long hours, taking up more challenges and dealing with an overwhelming amount of work.

However, what makes a successful employee stand out is not their dedication to the job but their will to starve their distraction and feed their focus.

Stop Making Excuses

“Chris doesn’t do as much work as I do!”

“My computer froze so I had to restart my work!”

“I’m not feeling well so they should give me a break.”

The truth is, as individuals, we tend to make excuses for everything. Whether it’s completing simple tasks or making plans, we always try to come up with something when we don’t want to follow through.

It can be frustrating when you turn it into a habit. Breaking away from bad habits takes a lot of effort.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

Here’s what you can do:

Tackle All the Complicated Tasks First

Tackling complicated tasks first helps you clear the path and pave the way for success.

It’s easy to complete minor tasks first, but when you’re stuck with a major project at the end of the day, you become more vulnerable to making mistakes.

When you get a quick start, your mind will be at ease. You can focus on working on smaller tasks, which won’t take up too much of your time.

Switch Off Your Phone

Let everyone know not to call or text you during the first 3 to 4 hours of the morning. This is when you need to get working on all those big tasks. This is because the first half is always slow. You’re groggy, you need your fix of coffee and waking up takes time.

Don’t let anything distract you, especially not your phone!

Categorize Tasks

Create a productivity system for yourself. Categorize tasks under the following:

  • Important, Urgent (Priority 1)
  • Important, Not Urgent (Priority 3)
  • Not important, Urgent (Priority 2)
  • Not important, Not Urgent (Priority 4)

This will help you prioritize and can get started earlier in the day.
