Let Go and Live YOUR Life

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that nothing in life is wasted if I view it as a lesson learned.   I now understand that every step I took, whether forward or backward, was necessary to prepare me to recognize and receive whatever gift was being given to me at the time. I needed every experience to help me grow.  And I mean every single experience: the good and the bad, the successes and the failures, the pain and the glory.

As a result of these myriad experiences, I have earned the credibility to do what I do today, help people to learn to be happy and successful no matter what their circumstances.

My quest to overcome the obstacles that were keeping me from the life I truly desired has brought my work full circle. I am truly grateful that I’ve come to the understanding that I never quit stand-up comedy.  I simply let go and yielded to a greater purpose.  A new dream.

Okay, I didn’t simply let go.  At times I held on with white knuckles in a desperate grip, kicking and screaming!  The point is, when I finally did let go, I was free to pursue my true dream– to use humor and the power of positive thinking to help teach people learn the skills they need to get to a better place at work and in life.

I’m here to tell you that no matter what your given circumstances, you can adjust your attitude and create a brighter reality.  It’s not the bad neighborhood you grew up in that led you on the wrong path.  It’s not the teacher who shunned your artistic talents or the parent who suggested you weren’t good enough that caused you to become stagnant.  And, it’s not the illness you have or the accident that left you physically challenged that’s keeping you in a state of isolation.

I’m in no way trying to trivialize life’s tribulations.  Let’s face it; some of us have a great deal of pain to deal with.  However, as every expert on wellness and change management knows, it is essential for your well being that you understand that circumstances, events, or situations are not the final word on your quality of life, no matter the severity.  It’s how you respond to them and the fear and other negative emotions they elicit that make the difference.

More than anything, it’s about making the mental shift in attitude that will allow you to power through whatever life throws at you.  In fact, it’s all about attitude. It’s always been about attitude.  And always will be about attitude!  You don’t have to be a motivational or inspirational speaker to turn your life around.  All you need is the courage to take that necessary first step.  So do yourself a favor and let go of whatever it is that’s holding you back and move forward with your life.  It’s time to Get Your SHIFT Together!

Just so you know:  Four years after high school, I finally mustered up enough courage to go to college.  I went on to surprise everyone, including myself, by excelling with honors at the university and postgraduate levels.  College was not always easy for me.  There were many times when my toxic labels (“Danger!  Failure Ahead!”) came back to haunt me, but I always somehow managed to bounce back and persevere.   Eventually, I got a job teaching at my old high school, proving once and for all that guidance counselors are not fortune-tellers.
