Get Going: Enhancing Your Mood NOW!

“The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”  – Scott Hamilton

A bad attitude is similar to a flat tire. Unless you change it, you can’t move forward.

Often, we wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Headaches, noisy neighbors, birds that just won’t stop chirping—these are a few things that can get on our nerves early in the morning.

The funny thing is, on a normal day, none of these even matters. However, when you’re in a bad mood, everything and everyone can annoy you. Things that don’t usually bug you are like boulders blocking your path.

However, when you’re working in a professional environment, it’s important to be courteous and keep your mood in check. How can you achieve that when all you want to do is scream and go home?

·         Pause Before You Say Something

When you’re angry, it’s easy to get carried away. Therefore, try to make it a habit to pause before you speak. When you’re talking to someone, or if someone approaches you, make sure to take a few seconds to think about what you want to say.

It’s easier said than done, but once you start practicing in front of a mirror, it will become habit. Remember that those who are tactful go a long way.

·         Appreciate What You Have

Take a moment to appreciate what you have. List down all the things you’re thankful for. Do this every day, early in the morning.

This will not only boost your mood, it will open your eyes to your surroundings.

Once you start noticing your surroundings, you will automatically make mental leaps and start appreciating everything in your life.

For example, when you think of having the privilege of working from home on rainy days, you will automatically think of other things, like having an understanding boss.

·         Go Through Positive Feedback

Sometimes we get angry because of a negative feedback our boss gives us. In such situations, we can start feeling unappreciated. Go through all the positive feedback you’ve been given in the past. Not only will that help make you feel better, you will realize your value in the organization.

Every person has a set of skills that makes them a talented individual. Ask your boss what makes you special and how you contribute to the team if you feel undervalued. You will be surprised to find that you’re more valuable than you think.
