Burnt out? Knocked down? You can always get back up

Life is never smooth sailing. I’m sure you already know that. But knowing this truth isn’t always enough because no matter how much we prepare for the bad days, they still hurt us. I’ve been there too, so I’m not going to tell you it’ll be okay or that you’ll get over it.

When you’re burnt out from working too much or feel knocked down because something didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to, it helps to know how to process all those mixed emotions. Your feelings won’t go away until you embrace them!

Focus on hope, gratitude and seeing the good during adverse times, and you will discover a brighter day, regardless of what is happening to you.

If things aren’t going well for you and you’re just really tired of trying, I’d like to help you gain some perspective with some of my takes on life. I’ve written quite in depth about how you can get back up after a fall and push yourself to do better in my newest book Motivate This!

I won’t go into details (you’ll have to read the book to find out!), but I will try to condense some key ideas that should help you get your motivation back! Let’s begin.

1. Be Kind to Yourself

To err is to be human. Don’t beat yourself up over your mistakes. There was a time when I felt completely lost and didn’t know what to do with my life. I could have succumbed to self-pity and self-hate, but I chose to be kind to myself. Part of that involves acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses and knowing where to draw the line with yourself. Being kind to myself is what helped me transition successfully from an all-star comedian to a Hall of Fame Speaker.

2. Meditate in the Morning

I’m a big fan of meditating early in the morning to kickstart my day. I wouldn’t want to just wake up, stuff burnt toast in my mouth and rush off to a job. That’s just going to kill your motivation to really work. Take your time; wake up early and do something that puts you in a good mood. Read, jog, write, listen to music, etc.

3. Enjoy the Process

I always tell my clients that happiness is not a destination. Don’t get upset if some events have pushed your goal further away. As long as you enjoy the process, you’re going to be fine. Frankly, you have a better chance at success if you go slowly and steadily than if you try to sprint through it.

People who consistently enjoy the process not only reap the benefits of achieving their goal, but they have a fond appreciation for how they earned it.

4. Take Breaks

Don’t get sucked into the rat race. You’re less likely to be satisfied with your life if you’re constantly comparing yourself to others. If there’s a day you’re not in the right state of mind to work, grant yourself that break. Actually, take frequent but smaller breaks. Yes, it’ll help you keep your head in the game, but, more importantly, it’ll give you time to reflect on what you’re doing and why.

We forget what a simple favor we’re doing ourselves when we occasionally step out of the grinding daily monotony and appreciate the simple aspects of our lives.
